Are you media literate? Have you thought about what that means? October 21-24, 2024 is the United States Media Literacy Week, a great time to think about the process.
Sponsored by NAMLE (the National Association for Media Literacy Education), U.S. Media Literacy Week “highlights the power of media literacy and its essential role in education all across the country.” If we are media literate, we can sift through all the stuff on the internet and figure out what is real and what is misinformation or fiction.
This year’s theme is “Access, Analyze, Evaluate, Create, and Act.” If we follow those steps, we can find the truth and help others find it as well. Just to summarize the process in a nutshell:
Access includes understanding how media and technology works, and how to access or locate content.
Analyze includes understanding who created a piece of media and examining the content.
Evaluate includes critical analysis and deciding if the content is credible.
Create includes creating one’s own content and thinking about whether it is fact or opinion.
Act includes sharing reliable content and empowering others.
