Several years ago, my husband and I were on a trip during the World Series. We had dinner in a sports bar, where everyone was watching the game with great excitement. He started explaining the game to me, and by the last inning, I caught the bug. Now, I watch the World Series every year.
I like how every player has their individual roles and also plays for the team. Each has to participate both on the infield and outfield (with a few exceptions). There's a lot of strategy involved. And being a history buff, I enjoy the stories about longtime baseball fields, teams, and heroes like Roberto Clemente and Jackie Robinson.
I also like the quirkier parts of the sport, like the team names, the stadium organs playing corny old songs, and players' good luck rituals--my friend Jennifer Bernard captured those well in her Love Between the Bases series (http://www.jenniferbernard.net/by-series). And as a nerd, I think it's fun how baseball media keeps statistics on everything--to give you one example from last week, did you know that 45 of 56 teams holding 2-0 leads won the World Series? Let's see if the Dodgers can pull it off this time.
Play ball!
P.S. The L.A. Dodgers won!
