The second week of November is National Young Readers Week! It started with a Pizza Hut promotion, then became a national celebration of child and teen readers. (Check out https://nationaltoday.com/national-young-readers-week/ for the whole origin story.) It’s a great time to buy kidlit books, read with your kids, or donate books. It’s also the perfect time for people like me to remember why we write for young readers.
I was a young reader, then a teacher, so I spent much of my life around young readers. I love how passionate kids can be about their favorite books, and how books can show them their life around them and the world beyond their horizons. And I still enjoy reading books meant for kid and teens. If you want to read diverse characters, innovative writing techniques, and engaging stories, you should try today’s kidlit.
I write for young people because I remember what it’s like to be figuring out who I am and where I fit in the world. I remember the roller coaster emotions of adolescence. I want to tell young people that they are enough just as they are, and they will be okay. I hope my writing can offer that to a reader who needs to hear it.
Happy Young Reader Week! May you find the perfect book for you, today and every day.
