The Joy of Writing Conferences
I love writing conferences. I learn new things, and meet experts in the field. I have opportunities to see writing in a different way. And most importantly, I get to hang out with my fellow writers.
My family and friends are great. Many of them are my best cheerleaders, and they encourage me in my writing. But most of them don’t have characters and stories running around in their heads. It’s nice to be with people who do.
Writers (and other creatives) understand the process, share the passion of finding just the right words or image. They know what it’s like to go through a dry spell or rush headlong into a new project. They’ve felt the self-doubt we all experience from time to time. It’s lovely to be with people who need no explanations, because we’ve all been there.
This weekend, I’ll be at the Writers and Illustrators Conference in Anchorage, sponsored by AKRWA, the Alaska Writers Guild, and SCBWI-Alaska. While I’m looking forward to my presentation on revision, I’m more excited about being with other writers again. I always feel inspired after spending time with my peers.
